Lowell

I watched on as Mac scrambled down the edge of the ravine, loosening rocks and clods of dirt. Hank nearly launched himself after him, headlong down the escarpment, so eager to get to his twin’s side, and I wrapped an arm around his waist, stopping him. “Hold on, don’t you dare go down there.”

“But it’s my sister,” he said, stating the obvious. “She needs me.”

“You’re just as likely to end up injured right along with her.” What I didn’t say was that Mac was an agile wolf shifter, and even if he hurt himself, he had extra healing ability. But I doubted he would fall. Mac appeared nimble and sure-footed.

When he reached the bottom, he waved back up and made his way over to where Greer was grimacing. Though she’d said she was fine, it was pretty obvious to me she was in pain. Her expression was tight, and there was a sheen of sweat on her brow. I wasn’t about to point this out to Hank, though. Mac crouched beside her, speaking in a low voice, asking about her injuries.

The sides of the ravine were steep; no wonder Greer hadn’t been able to find her way back up. I looked left and right, debating if it would be easier to carry her along the dry streambed until it leveled out.

Footsteps approached, an intentional cracking of twigs so he wouldn’t startle Hank, as the state trooper, Metro, emerged from the woods. He moved to stand beside us and glanced down at Greer. “Cinnamon, hmm?”

It was Hem who answered. “Yeah, easy to follow. She might as well have left us a trail of breadcrumbs to find. She must’ve been eating one of Lowell’s cinnamon buns. It’s a familiar scent for all of us around here.”

Metro chuckled. “Hell, I’m not from around here but I’ve still heard about them. They’re practically famous.”

Hank stiffened in my arms. I wasn’t sure what it was about Metro that set him off, but he obviously didn’t like the man. “My sister’s down there and needs help, and you’re joking about cinnamon buns?” he snarled. And then he took a deep breath and unloaded everything that was bothering him, spinning in my arms to jab a finger at Metro’s chest. “First, you send half the search party on a wild goose chase, then you just stand around while everyone else does the searching, and now you don’t even seem to give two shits about my injured sister. What kind of state trooper are you?”

To his credit, Metro didn’t get mad. In fact, there was even a little quirk to his lips, as though he was holding back a smile. He looked at me. “Good luck with that one,” he said before stepping forward, straight off the edge of the ravine.

Hank gasped as Metro dropped straight down, but when he rushed to the edge and looked over, the state trooper was just finishing his controlled slide down the cliff.

“What…” Hank began, totally stumped about what was going on. “He just—and I—but Greer…” This day was taking its toll.
